Lord Mayor recognised for cycling contribution (16 March, 2009)

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s transformation of Brisbane into Australia’s most cycle-friendly city has been recognised as “bold” and “visionary” by the industry’s peak body.

Cr Newman was presented with the Cycling Promotion Award of the Year for Special Initiatives at the National Bicycling Achievement Awards in Canberra today.

The award recognises special contributions towards promoting and encouraging cycling which are “outstanding” and “required vision, commitment and leadership”. (Read more in link )

Berwick News: Council Cycles to the top (16 April 2009)

Casey is spinning its way to the top after receiving an Australian Government Bicycle Achievement Award at a Council meeting last week. Deputy mayor Daniel Mulino accepted the local government award for a special initiative to encourage and promote cycling.

The award recognised the work of the City of Casey in collaboration with schools, health and community organisations, and as a ‘trailblazer’ in bike path development with the highest funding per capita of any Victorian municipality, Federal Cycling Promotion Fund program director Rosemarie Speidel said. “Our winners reflect the very best examples of individuals and groups working to promote and encourage cycling,” she said. Darebin Council: Cycling Awards Win (25 March 2009)

Darebin Council’s commitment to encourage cycling has been recognised with a national award. The City of Darebin and City of Casey were named joint winners of the Local Government Award for Special Initiative to Encourage and Promote Cycling at the National Bicycling Achievement Awards.

Darebin and Casey came out ahead of both Brisbane and Sydney, which have been noted for their work on cycling. Darebin Mayor, Cr Diana Asmar, said the award highlighted the breadth of Council’s work in promoting cycling.

“These awards are the biggest, most recognised cycling awards in Australia,” Cr Asmar said. “We have a strong history in promoting cycling and it is engrained in many aspects of our work.” (Read more in link)

Healthy Transport Tasmania: Three Tasmanian Political Leaders rewarded for supporting cycling

On the 26th March David Bartlett, Will Hodgman and Nick McKim were jointly awarded a national prize from the cycling promotion fund for their contribution to cycling in Tasmania.

Mary McParland from Cycling South, Tim Stredwick from the Tasmanian Bicycle Council and Katie Kingshott from Healthy Transport Hobart presented the awards on a sunny parliament house steps. 

The ceremony was covered by television news that evening in a story which highlighted the need for cyclists and motorists to share the road and play by the rules. (Read more in link)

Indigo Shire: Victoria Hotel Rutherglen wins major national cycling award (March 2009)

Rutherglen: The Victoria Hotel Rutherglen scoops major cycling award in Canberra (March 2009)

A Rutherglen hotel has ridden its way to the front of the pack when it comes to catering for holidaying cyclists.  Victoria Hotel owners Sean and Sarah Morris won the 2008 Bicycle Friendly Business Award for their development of a Cycling Concierge program.
